Safety and Preparation Rules for Cold Water wild Swimming

Safety is paramount in Open Water due to unpredictable conditions and the risk of Cold Water Shock.

· Never Swim Alone: this is he most crucial rule. Always swim with a ‘buddy’ or have a spotter on shore who knows your plans.

· Wear High-Visibility Gear: use a brightly coloured swimming cap and tow float to ensure you are visible to boats and rescuers.

· Acclimatize Slowly: Never jump or dive straight into cold water. Enter slowly to prevent Cold Water Shock which can cause gasping and panic.

· Plan Your Exit: identify your exit points before you get in. Conditions like muddy banks can make it much harder to get out than it was to get in. Use only designated entry and exit points.

· Swim only in designated areas: only swim in the area marketed by the buoys.

· Check conditions: Clearwater Activity Centre and Spring Valley Lakes Management and Staff will advise you if the weather conditions mean you are not able to access the lake for swimming.

· No Alcohol: Do not mix swimming with alcohol or drugs as they severely impair judgment and swimming ability
